Ajami
Ajami (120 minutes) Co-directed by Israeli and Palestinian filmmakers Yaron Shani and Scandar Copti, Ajami isa powerful crime drama set on the streets of Jaffa’s Ajami neighborhood. The film tells interwoven stories of Jewish, Muslim, and Christian neighbors, revealing the complexities of life and relationships in this melting pot of cultures. As their stories intersect – a young Israeli boy fighting a criminal vendetta against his family, a Palestinian refugee working illegally to finance a life-saving surgery, a Jewish police detective obsessed with finding his missing brother, and an affluent Palestinian dreaming of a future with his Jewish girlfriend, Ajami shifts back and forth in time. We witness a dramatic collision of different worlds and the tragic consequence of enemies living as neighbors.
“Powerful...rarely has the tinderbox nature of the Middle East been so accurately lensed, on such an intimate scale. There’s no denying Ajami’s gut-level force.” —Jay Weissberg, Variety
